High-Powered Offense Leads MVNU to Season Opening Victory over KSU Tuscarawas

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team (1-0) opened its season with a non-conference matchup at Ariel Arena against Kent State University Tuscarawas (0-1) on Wednesday, October 29. 

Kent State struck first, taking the early lead, but MVNU quickly matched the guest's energy. Through the first five minutes, Kent State trailed only narrowly, 11–14, before the Cougars found their rhythm and pulled ahead. As the first half unfolded, MVNU's composure showed as it committed just two turnovers compared to the Flashes' eleven. MVNU also shot 63.5% from the field in the first half and was 6-17 from three. By halftime, MVNU had built a commanding 67–44 lead. 

The Cougars continued to roll in the second half, attacking the paint and extending their advantage. Their biggest lead came with 4:53 remaining, when they were up by 54 points. MVNU never looked back, securing its first win of the season with an emphatic 125–75 victory over Kent State Tuscarawas. 

MVNU scored 62 points in the paint and won the rebounding battle 44-42. The Cougars forced 28 turnovers and turned them into 46 points. MVNU was efficient on offense and found the open man at will, finishing with 30 assists. For the game, the Cougars shot 56.5% from the field and hit 14 threes at a 40% clip. 

Isaiah Brown led the charge for the Cougars with 16 points, along with five steals, three rebounds, and three assists. Peyton Heiss and Mason Harvey each added 15 points, while Devin Dreier contributed 13 in the dominant home performance.

"A lot of growth on the floor today. Many guys got their first college experience. A lot to learn and grow from in the next few days. The Champions of Character game is always a great experience and opportunity for us to connect with kids in our community. Grateful for Paul and Chip for organizing such a unique day and game experience." 

 

What's Next 

The Cougars will be on the road traveling to Grayson, Kentucky to play against Kentucky Christian University on Saturday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m.
