Johnson’s 30-Piece Not Enough in Loss at Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (14-10, 6-8 CL) fell on the road to the Bethel University Pilots (12-12, 5-9 CL) by a final score of 62-74 on Saturday, February 8.

Bethel started the game strong, jumping to a 17-14 lead after the first quarter of play. Serenitee Johnson kept MVNU afloat with 13 second-quarter points and 20 points total in the first half. After the first 20 minutes, MVNU trailed 30-32.

The Pilots came out hot in the third quarter, opening it up with a 9-2 run to take a 41-32 lead with 6:19 left in the period. MVNU responded with a 6-0 run, cutting the deficit to three. Bethel responded to the MVNU surge, finishing the quarter on a 16-8 run. After three, Bethel held a 57-46 advantage over the guests on the scoreboard.

With 7:26 remaining in the game, Johnson's sensational day continued with a layup that cut Bethel's lead to 54-59. That would be as close as MVNU got the rest of the way as it was outscored 15-8 down the stretch in the 62-74 defeat.

MVNU shot just 37.3% from the floor and was 3-20 (15%) from deep. Bethel shot 37.5% from the field and made seven threes at a 35% clip.

Bethel made 33 trips to the free throw line, hitting 25 of its attempts.

MVNU was outrebounded 47-27 and conceded 14 offensive rebounds.
