Softball Finishes Series at Grace with 13-6 Victory

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (25-21, 18-18 CL) continued the weather suspended game from April 21 at Grace College on Monday, April 27, which left off at the top of the fifth inning with MVNU winning by a score 11-6 at the time. 

In the first inning, Avery Miller, Dakota Staffan, and Skylar Zimmerman scored for the Lady Cougars, going up 3-0. In the top of the second inning, Brooklyn Krum and Jesenia Montalvo would both get on base after singles. Krum and Montalvo would both score after Zimmerman's single to center field. Miller then hit a single to center field and would later be advanced to third after a single from Kiera Mayer, which also advanced Staffan to second who was also on base. Miller and Staffan would both score off a Grace error. Mayer would later score after a single from Makenzie Delaney, putting MVNU up after the second inning 8-0. 

Grace managed to bring in five runs at the bottom of the third inning to bring the score to 8-5. Miller's single to left, and Staffan's double to right would start a three-run inning in the top of the fourth. Grace would score one run in the bottom of the fourth, but MVNU would still be on top 11-6. Staffan would secure the Lady Cougars 13-6 win after hitting a two-run homerun to left field.  

Staffan led the Lady Cougar offense, having four runs, three hits, one home run, one double and two RBI. Miller had three runs and two hits. Zimmerman had two runs, three hits, two doubles, and two RBI. On the mound for MVNU, Delaney pitched all seven innings, having five strikeouts. With the win, MVNU secured the No. 6 seed in the Crossroads League standings.

The Lady Cougars will next advance to the Crossroads League Play-In Game against Huntington University at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Tuesday, April 28, starting at 4:00 p.m.
