Lady Cougars Chop Down Foresters on Senior Day

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (19-17, 12-14 CL) hosted the Huntington University Foresters (21-17, 13-13 CL) for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11.

It was senior day at Cougar Field as the team honored Avery Miller, Brooklyn Krum, Kiera Mayer, and Zhari Hill for their contributions to MVNU over the past four seasons.

MVNU and Huntington remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Mayer doubled to center field on the first pitch and scored Dakota Staffan, giving the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead. MVNU added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Skylar Zimmerman hit a triple that scored Jesenia Montalvo, and Zimmerman later scored in the next at-bat when Staffan hits sac-fly to center field, bringing her home from third. MVNU would go on to win by a final of 3-0 in game one. Staffan was dominant from inside the circle for MVNU. The junior allowed just three hits and no runs in seven innings pitched. Staffan had three strikeouts for the Lady Cougars.

In the second game, the Lady Cougars took their first lead in the bottom of the second inning. Miller got things started with a single to left field and was advanced by another single from Shanda Melick. Hill followed with a single to shortstop that drove in a run, giving MVNU a 2–0 lead over the Foresters. The Lady Cougars added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Melick, Krum, and Zimmerman each recorded a hit to extend the lead to 3–0. MVNU secured the final out in the top of the seventh to seal the victory and complete the sweep over Huntington with a 3–0 final score. Bailey Sheets was strong in her start as she allowed just two hits in her seven innings pitched.

 

What's Next

The Lady Cougars will play their final home games on Tuesday, April 14 against the University of Saint Francis Cougars at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
