Softball Bounces Back with Game Two Win at Huntington
HUNTINGTON, Ind.– The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (9-9, 2-6 CL) played a doubleheader against the Huntington University Foresters (13-7, 5-3 CL) in a road conference match-up in Huntington, Indiana on Thursday, March 19.
Jesenia Montalvo helped lead the Lady Cougars' offense in the first game, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a single to right field in the first inning and a double to right in the top of the third. Brooklyn Krum, Camden Laymon, Avery Miller, and Skylar Zimmerman each added a hit, but the effort wasn't enough to put the Foresters away. Huntington did all its damage in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs for the game's only runs. Huntington took game one by a final score of 3–0.
In the second game, the Lady Cougars struck first, taking an early 1–0 lead over the Foresters. Montalvo opened the inning with a double to center field and later scored on a double to left by Kiera Mayer. Huntington responded in the bottom of the second inning to even the score at 1–1. The Foresters then plated runs in back-to-back innings in the third and fourth to take a 3–1 lead over MVNU.
The Lady Cougars answered with a big top of the fifth inning. Shanda Melick led off with a single and advanced into scoring position before coming home on Krum's double to center. Mayer followed with a single to center field that drove in two more runs, giving the Lady Cougars a 4–3 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Zimmerman lined a single to center field and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Dakota Staffan then hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot that extended the Lady Cougars' lead to 6–3. Huntington added one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Cougars secured the final three outs to seal the 6–4 conference victory.
What's Next
The Lady Cougars will be back on the road traveling to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on the University of Saint Francis in a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
