Softball Falls in Two Game Series to Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (8-6, 1-3) traveled to Taylor University (9-7, 4-0) on Friday, March 13 for a Crossroads League doubleheader. 

In the bottom of the first inning in game one, Taylor scored three runs to make a 3-0 lead over MVNU. MVNU would get on the board with one run during the top of the third inning. Taylor would answer back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third, extending the lead to 9-1. Taylor added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lady Cougars would manage to score two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, but Taylor would win on the mercy rule with a score of 14-3. 

Skylar Zimmerman had two runs, one stolen base, and one hit for MVNU. Kiera Mayer had one run, one hit, and two RBI. Pitching for the Lady Cougars, Dakota Staffan faced 17 batters and had three strikeouts. 

In game two, Taylor scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After three consecutive scoreless innings for MVNU, Taylor would score one run in the bottom of the second inning and two in the bottom of the third, going up 5-0. MVNU would answer back in the fourth inning, putting up four runs. Taylor would score three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the bottom of the fifth with the lead 9-4. The Lady Cougars would bring in one run in the sixth inning, while holding Taylor no runs in the bottom of the sixth. MVNU scored one more run in the seventh inning, attempting to narrow the Taylor lead, but Taylor would win 9-6. 

Bailey Sheets was in the circle for the Lady Cougars. Sheets faced 25 batters, throwing three strikeouts. Avery Miller and Staffan both had two runs. Miller had two hits and one RBI. Zimmerman had one run and one hit. Mayer added one homerun off one hit and four RBI. 

 

What's Next 

The Lady Cougars will stay on the road, traveling to Indiana Wesleyan University for a double header on Saturday, March 14. The games will start at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
