MVNU Softball Takes Two More Wins in Space Coast Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. The Mount Vernon Nazarene Universitsoftball team (5-1) continued its stretch of spring games in Florida at the USSSA Space Coast against Mount Marty University (4-6) and the University of Fort Lauderdale (1-15) on Wednesday, March 4.  

In the first game, Mount Marty struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning. Avery Miller quickly responded, blasting her first home run of the season to deep left field to even the score at 1–1. 

The Lady Cougars pulled ahead in the top of the third when Skylar Zimmerman doubled to center field, driving in Zhari Hill and Jesenia Montalvo to make it 3–1. In the fifth, Kiera Mayer delivered another key double to center, scoring Dakota Staffan, and later came around to score herself to extend the lead to 5–1. 

The Lancers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 5–3. MVNU added two more runs to push the advantage to 7–3. Mount Marty managed one final run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Cougars closed out the inning to secure a 7–4 victory. 

Makenzie Delaney earned her first win as a Lady Cougar, allowing just three hits and one walk in the complete-game effort. 

In the second game, the Lady Cougars wasted no time at the plate. Miller roped a double to left field to score Zimmerman, and Mayer followed with a single to right-center that brought Miller home, giving MVNU an early 2–0 lead. Zimmerman later drove in another run to extend the advantage to 3–0. 

The offense continued to roll in the bottom of the fourth. Brooklyn Krum led off with a single and eventually came around to score, while Montalvo also crossed the plate as the Lady Cougars added three more runs to stretch the lead to 6–0. The Lady Cougars sealed the victory in the fifth inning, tacking on two more runs to secure an 8–0 final. 

Staffan earned the win in the circle, picking up her second victory of the season and tossing her first shutout as a Cougar. 

 

What's Next  

The Lady Cougar softball team will return to the USSSA Space Coast on Friday, March 6 for a double-header conference match up against Marian Universitat 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in Melbourne, Florida.
