Softball Advances in Crossroads League Tournament with Win over Huntington

UPLAND, Ind. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (29-20) took on the Huntington University Foresters (33-18) in the Crossroads League Softball Tournament on Thursday, May 1 at Gudakunst Field.  

MVNU got on the board early in the first inning, when Avery Miller delivered an RBI single to give the Lady Cougars a 1–0 lead. The offense exploded in the top of the third, beginning with a double to center by Skylar Zimmerman. Miller stayed hot, driving in Zimmerman, and was followed by RBI hits from Sydney Hoover, Mollie Pentz, and Zhari Hill. By the end of the inning, MVNU had tacked on five runs to extend the lead to 6–0. 

Huntington answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third, trimming the deficit to 6–1. The Lady Cougars continued to apply pressure. In the top of the fourth, Hoover singled to bring home Dakota Staffan, pushing the lead to 7–1. 

MVNU capped off its scoring in the fifth inning. Jesenia Montalvo led off with a solo home run to center, her third of the season. Later in the inning, Zimmerman singled up the middle to drive in Hill. 

Nadia Hoffman took the circle for the Lady Cougars and delivered a dominant performance, striking out seven and allowing just two hits over the course of the game. Backed by a strong offensive performance, MVNU cruised to a 9–1 win over Huntington, punching its ticket to the next round of the Crossroads League Tournament. 

 

What's Next: 

The Lady Cougars will play the next round in the tournament on Thursday, May 1, at 5:00 p.m. against the winner of Spring Arbor University and University of Saint Francis at Gudakunst Field on Taylor University's campus.
