Lady Cougars Secure Season Sweep of Maple Leafs

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (21-16, 14-14 CL) hosted Goshen College (16-22, 12-16 CL) in a Crossroads League matchup on Thursday, April 17.

Game 1 Summary:

Goshen got a run in the top of the first, but MVNU responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Mollie Pentz hit an RBI single to center that scored Kylie Rohr, Avery Miller drove in Skylar Zimmerman with a single to right, and Dakota Staffan brought home Pentz with an RBI single of her own. A homer from the Maple Leafs in the fifth cut MVNU's advantage to a single run, but the Lady Cougars answered in the sixth with a sac fly from Miller and a two-run homer from Staffan. MVNU would go on to win 6-2.

Nadia Hoffman got the win in the circle, pitching seven innings and allowing just two hits and two runs. Hoffman had six strikeouts.

Game 2 Summary:

Seven innings weren't enough to decide a winner in the second game of the series. After seven innings, the game remained tied at 6-6 until the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs, Sophie Durbin got on base with a single to center field. Durbin then advanced to second after a single from Zhari Hill. In the next at-bat, Rohr drew a walk to load the bases. Zimmerman, the reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week, stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off single through the gap. The Lady Cougars took game two and secured the series sweep by a final score of 7-6.

Hoffman picked up her second win of the day after pitching four scoreless innings of relief. Hoffman allowed just two hits and had four strikeouts.
