Softball Splits Doubleheader at Taylor
UPLAND, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (18-13, 11-11 CL) remained on the road for a conference doubleheader at Taylor University (23-13, 12-10 CL) on Friday, April 11.
Game 1 Summary:
MVNU started fast, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Dakota Staffan scored Mollie Pentz after a double to left field, and Avery Miller hit a three-run homer over the left-centerfield fence to put MVNU up 4-0. Taylor kept pace with MVNU in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs of its own. The Lady Cougars reclaimed the lead after Pentz hit an RBI single to center field that brought home Kylie Rohr in the top of the second.
The Trojans answered right back in the bottom of the inning, putting four more runs on the scoreboard to take an 8-5 lead. MVNU managed to get back a run in the top of the seventh but was unable to produce anything else at the plate. The Lady Cougars would fall by a final score of 6-8.
Game 2 Summary:
MVNU bounced back in the second game of the day with a 6-4 win. Home runs from Staffan and Jesenia Montalvo in the third and fourth innings put the Lady Cougars up 3-1. MVNU trailed 3-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but they were able to tie the game after Zhari Hill scored on a fielder's choice. MVNU later reclaimed the lead for good thanks to Staffan's RBI single in the top of the sixth. MVNU tacked on one more run in the seventh and would go on to win 6-4.
Nadia Hoffman put together a strong performance for MVNU, allowing just four hits and three earned runs through seven innings. Hoffman had 11 strikeouts in the start.

MVNU takes on Marian University at the Cougar Softball Field on Saturday, April 12. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
