Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Aquinas in WHAC Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio.  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's volleyball team (4-1, 1-0 WHAC) hosted Aquinas College (1-4, 0-1 WHAC) at Ariel Arena on Saturday, January 31 in its Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference opener. 

MVNU jumped out to an early 7–3 lead in the opening set before the Saints responded and tied the score at 10–10. Aquinas stayed within a point of the Cougars for much of the set, but Mount Vernon pulled ahead 20–17 and closed strong, forcing consecutive attack errors to secure a 25–19 win. 

The Cougars capitalized on Aquinas' early mistakes in the second set and maintained control throughout. MVNU extended its lead to 9–5, forcing the Saints to call a timeout. Ethan Cline helped the Cougars pull away with nine kills in the match, as Mount Vernon claimed the second set 25–16. 

The third set opened with a back-and-forth rally before the Cougars went on an offensive surge. Noah Wineberg delivered back-to-back kills to give MVNU a 10–5 advantage. Aquinas fought back to cut the deficit to 11–8, but the Cougars held firm and closed out the final set 25–18 to secure the victory in three. 

Jaxson Snell paced the Cougars with 25 assists, while Tommy Tierney contributed seven kills and seven digs in the WHAC matchup. 

 

What's Next 

The men's volleyball team will be traveling to Goshen, Indiana to take on Goshen College on Friday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
