Men’s Basketball Improves to 2-0 with Road Win at Kentucky Christian
GRAYSON, Ky. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team (2-0) traveled to Kentucky Christian University (0-3) where it won 97-78 on Saturday, November 1.
After Kentucky Christian took a steady lead in the first half, MVNU tied the game at 16-16 with 10:23 on the clock. MVNU picked up its intensity and closed the half on a 31-15 run to take control of the game. MVNU led 47-31 at the break. The Cougars shot 45.7% from the field and 57.1% (4-7) from three in the first half. MVNU was relentless in the second half, pushing its lead to as many as 27 points. MVNU cruised to a 97-78 win.
MVNU had four players hit double-digits in scoring. Peyton Heiss led the Cougar offense, scoring 24 points, four steals, seven rebounds, and was 4-4 at the free throw line. Isaiah Brown added 17 points, four rebounds, and led the team with four assists. Trent Koning had 12 points, three steals, two assists, and three rebounds. Devin Dreier came away with ten points, one block, and leading the team with nine rebounds.
MVNU had 44 rebounds to Kentucky Christian's 28 rebounds. The Cougars caused 17 turnovers, scoring 25 points off them. MVNU went 26-32 at the free throw line, 43.8% from beyond the arc, and 47.1% from the field overall.
Coach Ronai's Thoughts
"Our guys did a great job of battling through early adversity with the delayed start to the game. Overall, I thought our pressure wore on them for 40 minutes and we did a great job on the offensive glass, however, we have to do a better job of finishing in the box area. We're looking forward to a week of Prep and a week of getting better next week."
