Baseball Claims First Game of Series at IWU with 17 Run Explosion

MARION, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (19-20, 9-17 CL) began its road series at Indiana Wesleyan University (24-14, 17-8 CL) with a doubleheader on Thursday, April 9.

The bats were hot from MVNU from the start in game one as the Cougars lit up the scoreboard and jumped out to a 10-2 lead after the first seven innings. IWU responded with a big seventh inning as it plated six runs to cut MVNU's lead to 10-8. Ryan Willoughby shifted momentum back towards MVNU's favor with his fifth homerun of the season to put the Cougars up 11-8. MVNU added another run in the inning thanks to an Andrew Moffitt RBI single and scored five more in the top of the ninth to take a commanding 17-8 lead. IWU did add four runs in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little too late for the Wildcats. MVNU had 14 total hits in the 17-12 win. Willoughby, Kaid Carpenter, and Moffitt each led MVNU with three runs batted in each.

Tied at 1-1 heading into the third inning of game two, MVNU scored five runs to take a 6-1 lead and then added two more in the next inning to stretch its advantage to 8-1. IWU came roaring back in the bottom of the fifth with a huge nine run inning to take a 10-8 lead. A sac fly from Brady Lester gave MVNU a run in the top of the sixth, but IWU answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame. MVNU was unable to generate a comeback and would fall by a final score of 9-11 after seven innings.
