MVNU Baseball Sweeps Wolverines
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (18-19) hosted the University of Michigan Dearborn (5-22) in a nonconference doubleheader at the Cougar Baseball Field on Tuesday, April 7.
MVNU fell behind 0-1 in the top of the first but responded with a big bottom of the inning with four runs. Jack Schreck drove in Carter LaPata with a fielder's choice and would later score after a double to right field from Brennen Nichols. Maxwell Kilzer pinch ran for Nichols and would come home after an RBI single by Kevin Inman. MVNU's other run in the inning came when Ryan Willoughby came home after a fielding error by the catcher. MVNU remained hot for the remainder of the game, scoring two runs in each of the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. MVNU had nine total hits in the 12-2 win. Carter LaPata had a big first game at the plate as he went two-for-four with four runs driven in. LaPata also drew a walk and had a stolen base. Willoughby got the win on the mound for the Cougars as he allowed only one earned run and five hits through five innings. Willoughby had six strikeouts.
Brady Lester led MVNU to a 10-2 win in game two. Lester got the scoring started in the first with his single to right field that brought home Rider Minnick and LaPata. Lester later came home to score on Schreck's sac-fly, making the score 3-0. Despite giving up some runs, MVNU remained in control, leading 7-2 in the third. Lester broke the game open by hitting a three-run homer, giving MVNU ten runs in the game. The Cougars finished game two with eight hits. Tyler Barton picked up the win for MVNU as he allowed three hits and one earned run in five innings pitched. The freshman had eight strikeouts.

The Cougars play at Indiana Wesleyan University on April 10-11 in Marion, Indiana. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m.
