Veale Gets 1,200 Win as Cougars Sweep Lourdes

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (15-10) hosted Lourdes University (9-15) at the Cougar Baseball Field on Tuesday, March 24.

MVNU got off to a fast start, plating four runs in the first inning. In the second, Lourdes put three runs on the board, cutting MVNU's lead to 4-3. In the bottom of the frame, Ryan Willoughby scored after a wild pitch and in the sixth Brady Lester hit a two-run homer, his second of the season, putting MVNU up 7-3. Kaid Carpenter also blasted a two-run bomb in the same inning, putting the Cougars up 9-3, which would be the final score at the end of the game.

Grant Peters picked up the win on the mound after his strong relief stint, pitching a scoreless three innings while allowing just two hits to go with his four strikeouts.

Head Coach Keith Veale picked up his 1,200-career win with the game one result.

In game two, MVNU trailed 1-3 in the third until Willoughby drove home Rider Minnick with a single to right field. Schreck then hit a sac-fly that scored Willoughby, tying the game 3-3. A huge bottom of the fifth gave the Cougars complete control. Tyler Ooten was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Carpenter to come home from third. Alejandro Delgado later scored after an RBI from Andrew Moffit. Minnick then cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field, making the score 8-3. MVNU would claim the win by that score.

Tyler Barton picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just one hit to go with two strikeouts.

MVNU heads back into Crossroads League play on Friday, March 27 in Spring Arbor, Michigan at Spring Arbor University. The doubleheader starts at 3:00 p.m. with game two to follow.
