Baseball Drops First Two Games to No. 3 Taylor

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (13-10, 7-7 CL) began its four-game series against the No. 3 Taylor University Trojans (24-3, 12-2 CL) at Cougar Field on Friday, March 20.

Taylor opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. MVNU answered Taylor's big start with a three-run homer from Ryan Willoughby in the bottom of the inning, tying the game 3-3. The home run was Willoughby's second of the season. While MVNU benefited from the longball in the first inning, it would be Taylor that would use it to its advantage the rest of the way. The Trojans hit four home runs and collected 19 hits total over the course of the game. MVNU was unable to slow down Taylor's high-powered lineup, falling by a score of 7-15 after nine. Willoughby finished the game two-for-four at the plate with his home run and four RBI. Brennen Nichols knocked in two runs for MVNU. Kaid Carpenter collected an RBI as well with his single to left in the ninth inning.

Taylor continued to utilize the deep ball in game two of the series as it left the yard three more times. The Trojans plated two runs in the third and three runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. MVNU was able to narrow the gap in the sixth after Carpenter drove in Brady Lester and Rider Minnick with his single to right field, but Taylor put the game away with two more runs in the top of the seventh. MVNU fell in the final game of the day by a final of 2-7.
