Lady Cougars Place Third at Muskie Meet
NEW CONCORD, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's track & field team competed at the Muskie Meet, hosted by Muskingum University, on Saturday, January 28. The Lady Cougars placed third overall out of 13 teams.
Top Performers
Lyssi Snouffer jumped a height of 1.62m to surpass her own previous school record and place second in the event.
The team of Ashley Burgess, Snouffer, Jocelyn Dornbirer, and Kaitlin Meade placed first in the 4x400m. The team set a new school record in a time of 4:12.95.
Ellyn Coe had a great race in the 1k, placing second overall in a time of 3:11.38. Dornbirer followed close behind to finish in third place with a time of 3:11.83.
Makayla Roberts had a great day overall for throwing. Roberts finished second in shot put hitting a mark of 11.59m. She finished second in weight throw as well, with a mark of 14.42m.
Coach Gallion's Thoughts
"Muskingum turned into the perfect meet for us at this given moment. We are training hard and having an overall team mindset that sets us up for success, Lord willing, in a couple weeks at the conference meet. However, this meet was still a great opportunity to learn about ourselves and grow as athletes. Not only did we continue to grow but some high achievements were met also.
Morgan Forney is a great leader for our young distance team and she does an amazing job off the track, but yesterday proved her prowls on it as well. Cracking 19 minutes indoors for the 5k is a great mark. Elsewhere our younger ladies showed that they are ready to compete. Lauren Warder had a nice 800 and our 1k crew of Raelyn Barrett, Jocelyn Dornbirer, and Ellyn Coe all placed inside the top eight. Jocelyn and Ellyn had a fun battle down the stretch and that is a joy for a coach to see. Outside of distance, Makayla Roberts continues to be a presence in both throwing rings. She placed second in both weight throw and shot put!
Other field highlights include Brooke Holloway's third place finish in vault and Lyssi Snouffer's second place in high jump. From the sprinters I was happy to see Maddie Kitchen's continued growth in the 60 and 200, she has shown considerable progress in these events, but she still has so much more growth to be had and that is exciting! Lastly, our distance and sprints team joined forces to bring home the 4x4 crown in an exciting race. Ashley Burgess had a great lead leg and Kaitlin Meade held us in place, before Lyssi powered through an impressive leg to give us a sturdy lead going into the final leg. Jocelyn then showed a lot of grit and composure to hold off a late charging challenger and bring us in for another school record! Next week will be a great challenge as we seek to learn more about ourselves and compete in a way that honors Christ in victory and defeat."
