Women’s Soccer Starts Season Strong with 3-1 Win in Home-Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team (1-0) started the season off strong with a 3-1 win over Shawnee State University (0-1) in its home-opener on Saturday, August 23. 

In the first half, MVNU's defense only allowed one shot by Shawnee State, while firing off eight shots on the offensive end. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. 

With only 1:39 into the second half, a foul in the box allowed Alexis Hoffman to capitalize on the penalty kick, giving MVNU a 1-0 lead. Shawnee State's, Annie Coriell, came away with the equalizer in the 77th minute mark, but MVNU was quick with the counter after a handball in the box. Bekah Blair scored the second penalty kick of the game for MVNU. MVNU sealed the win after Hoffman's goal in the 87th minute. 

Hoffman came away with four shots on goal and two goals for MVNU. Blair had three shots on goal and one goal. Cora Bishop also added one shot on goal for the Lady Cougars. On the day MVNU outshot Shawnee State 17-7. Hannah Miller played the full 90 minutes in goal for MVNU, collecting four saves on the day. 

 

What's Next: 

MVNU will be back in action on Wednesday, August 27. MVNU will travel to take on Cleary University (Mich.) with kick-off starting at 5:00 p.m.
