Blubaugh Hits Career-High in Points at No. 5 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (6-17, 2-11 CL) traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to play No. 5 Marian University (21-2, 11-2 CL) on Wednesday, February 4. 

Marian took a quick lead in the first quarter that would last throughout, ending with a score of 25-5 after the first ten minutes of play. A made three-pointer from Melodie Blubaugh would attempt to give the Lady Cougar offense some life late in the second quarter before half, making the score 34-16, but the Knights would stay on top at the break with a score of 41-22. 

Marian continued to build on its lead in the third quarter, which would end with a score of 68-34. Anna Swisshelm's free throws and two layups at the end of the fourth quarter would attempt to trim down the Marian lead, but the Knights would win with a score of 94-42. 

Blubaugh led MVNU's offense, scoring her career-high of 15 points. She was 5-12 from the field and 4-11 from deep. The freshman grabbed four rebounds and had one steal. Swisshelm scored ten points and had five rebounds. MVNU went 29.8% from the field, 28.0% from the three-point line, and 58.3% at the free-throw line. As a team, MVNU had 33 turnovers which led to 44 points and conceded 16 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points.

The Lady Cougars will next host Grace College on Saturday, February 7 at Ariel Arena, starting at 1:00 p.m.
