Fast Start Leads to Road Win for Lady Cougars at Cleary

LANSING, Mich. - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (1-0) opened its regular season with a road win at Cleary University (0-1) on Friday, October 25 at Gannon Gymnasium.

MVNU came out of the gate ready to go, opening the game on a 19-2 run and never trailed. MVNU had its largest lead of 23 points after an Emily Walker three made the score 33-10 with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter.

Despite battling foul trouble in the second half and seeing three of its players foul out, MVNU remained strong and thwarted any attempt of a Cleary comeback. The Lady Cougars went on to win its season opener by an 86-69 final.

 

Inside the Box Score:

MVNU shot 49% from the field and hit 7 threes in the game. MVNU shared the ball offensively, finishing with 22 assists.

The Lady Cougars won the battle of the boards 36-30.

MVNU held Cleary to 40% shooting from the floor and 26% shooting from deep.

MVNU also created havoc defensively, forcing 21 turnovers.

Katie Sprang - 12 points (5-11 FG, 2-6 3PT), 5 rebounds, 1 steal.

Angela Roshak - 11 points (4-6 FG, 3-3 FT), 5 blocks, 4 steals, 4 rebounds.

Walker - 10 points (4-9 FG, 2-7 3PT), 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals.

MVNU plays at Holy Cross (Ind.) on Friday, November 1 in St. Joseph County, Indiana at 5:00 p.m.
