Lady Cougars Take Game Two Over Taylor

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (17-17, 10-14 CL) hosted Taylor University (19-16, 14-9 CL) for a doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Field on Wednesday, April 8. 

In game one, Taylor took a quick lead over MVNU, going up 7-0 after the top of the fourth inning. MVNU answered back in the bottom of the fourth, putting up one run, after a sacrifice fly from Dakota Staffan which scored Skylar Zimmerman. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Zhari Hill's double brought in Brooklyn Krum, and another double from Jesenia Montalvo would then score Hill, bringing the score 7-3 still in favor of Taylor. Taylor would score two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, going up 9-3. The Lady Cougars would make one more effort to close the lead, after a run scored by Avery Miller off Camden Laymon's single. However, Taylor would win the first game 9-4. 

In game two, MVNU came back fighting. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Montalvo singled to right to score Krum. Zimmerman then reached first after a Taylor error, which also allowed Hill to score. Staffan singled to center field, scoring Montalvo, putting MVNU up 3-0. Taylor answered in the top of the fourth inning, scoring one run. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Staffan once again hit a single, scoring Zimmerman, extending the lead to 4-1. Taylor would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it would not be enough as MVNU would win 4-3. Staffan picked up the win for MVNU in the circle. Staffan pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. 

 

What's Next 

MVNU will return to the Cougar Softball Field on Saturday, Aprill 11 when hosting Huntington University for Senior Day. The doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. with the second game following at 3:00 p.m.
