MVNU Softball Sweeps Bethel

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (12-12, 5-9 CL) hosted the Bethel University Pilots (6-16, 2-9) at the Cougar Softball Field on Tuesday, March 24.

In game one, Dakota Staffan set the tone from the start by blasting her seventh home run of the season. The homer was a three-run shot to centerfield on a 3-2 count. The Lady Cougars added two more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. After a two-run single from Skylar Zimmerman in the bottom of the fourth to put her team up 7-0, MVNU ended the game in the sixth with Avery Miller's single to left field that scored Zimmerman. MVNU took game one with a final score of 8-0. Bailey Sheets pitched a great game in the circle for the Lady Cougars, pitching six scoreless innings. Sheets allowed just four hits.

MVNU continued its strong play in game two. A big four-run second inning gave the Lady Cougars control. Zimmerman scored Shanda Melick with a base hit and Staffan had a bases clearing double to right field, making the score 4-0. Miller tacked on MVNU's final run in the fifth with an RBI double to center that scored Zimmerman. The Lady Cougars would win by a final of 5-1. Makenzie Delaney got the win for MVNU, allowing seven hits through seven innings of work. The freshman allowed just one unearned run and had five strikeouts.

MVNU hosts Grace College on Friday, March 27. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m.
