MVNU Splits Doubleheader with Goshen in Home Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio- The Mount Vernon Nazarene Universitsoftball team (10-12, 3-9 CL) spilt its home opener doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Field against the Goshen College Maple Leafs (9-13, 3-7 CL) on Saturday, March 21.  

In the first game, the Lady Cougars broke through in the bottom of the third inning, as Skylar Zimmerman roped a triple to center field. Dakota Staffan followed with a single to left, bringing Zimmerman home and giving MVNU a 1–0 lead. 

Goshen responded in the top of the sixth, scoring a run to even the game at 1–1 and eventually forcing extra innings. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Zimmerman led off with a single and advanced on another hit from Staffan. With runners in scoring position, Avery Miller grounded out to third base, but a muffed throw allowed Zimmerman to cross the plate. The Lady Cougars walked it off with a 2–1 victory. Bailey Sheets took her fourth win in the circle, with three strikeouts and only giving up four hits.  

In the second game, Goshen made an early statement by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. MVNU responded in the bottom half when Jesenia Montalvo singled and advanced into scoring position on an error. Zimmerman followed with a single to right field, bringing Montalvo home. Staffan then stepped up to the plate and launched a ball over the left-field fence for her sixth home run of the season, tying the game at 2–2. 

Goshen regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning and held on to it for the remainder of the game. MVNU ultimately fell by a final score of 2-3 after the game tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game in the bottom of the seventh. 

 

What's Next  

The Lady Cougars will return to the Cougar Softball Field in Mount Vernon, Ohio on Monday, March 23 to take on Cornerstone University at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
