Lady Cougars Split With Maple Leafs

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (21-17, 14-12) faced Goshen College (23-19, 12-16) in a Crossroads League doubleheader at the Goshen College Softball Complex on Friday, April 19.

In game one, MVNU struggled to get its offense going, managing just two hits courtesy of Kiera Mayer and Mackenzie Hancock. Maddelyn Wine delivered a solid performance in the circle, pitching six innings and only allowing three hits and one run while striking out four batters. The lone run of the game occurred in the bottom of the first inning due to a Goshen solo home run. MVNU ended up on the losing side, falling by a final of 0-1.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Mayer launched a home run to center field in the top of the first, driving in two runs. Holding a 2-0 lead, Avery Miller delivered a single to first base, scoring Zhari Hill for the third run of the inning. In the top of the second inning, Mayer drilled a single back to the pitcher to bring home Sydney Elliott. Brooklyn Krum's hit to center field brought home two more for MVNU as Mayer and Mallory Holcomb crossed the plate to take a 6-0 lead through two. In the top of the third inning, Kylie Rohr hit up the middle and drove in Holcomb, extending MVNU's lead to 7-0. Goshen scored four runs in the later innings, but MVNU was able to hold on for the 7-4 victory. Sheridan Sullivan pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs and one hit with four strikeouts.

 

What's Next:

Softball travels to Mishawaka, Indiana for a conference doubleheader at Gardner Field against Bethel University on Saturday, April 20. First pitch will be at 1:00pm.
