Lady Cougars Sweep Trojans in Home Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (9-7, 2-2) had its home opener against Taylor University (9-9, 1-3) on Friday, March 15.

MVNU took the first game of the doubleheader by a final of 4-3. After holding a 2-0 lead, MVNU surrendered three runs in the top of the sixth and found itself trailing 2-3. The Lady Cougars were able to get some baserunners in the bottom of the inning and capitalized on an error at second base. Kylie Rohr reached first on the error and that allowed Mallory Holcomb and Shanda Melick to come home. Holding a 4-3 lead, Bailey Sheets was able to get the save and preserve the victory. Sheets got the win and pitched 1.1 innings of relief. Sheets gave up zero runs and hits and had one strikeout. Sheridan Sullivan got the start, pitching 5.2 innings. The senior gave up three runs (one earned), three hits, and had two strikeouts.

The Lady Cougars secured the sweep after Rohr hit a walk-off single to right field. MVNU trailed 0-2 entering the bottom of the seventh but got on the board with an RBI single from Ashtynn Roberts. Rohr then stepped to the plate and drove home Holcomb and Sydney Elliott to win the game.

Sheets picked up her second win of the day after pitching two innings of relief. The freshman allowed no runs and just one hit to go with two strikeouts. Nadia Hoffman got the start and gave up just two runs through five innings. Hoffman had three strikeouts.

 

What's Next:

MVNU hosts No.14 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, March 16 at Cougar Field. The doubleheader starts at 1:00pm.
