Lady Cougars Drop Doubleheader to No. 22 IWU
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The No.20 Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (22-9, 14-8 CL) lost both games of its doubleheader with No. 22 Indiana Wesleyan University (26-10, 15-7 CL) on Friday afternoon, April 14 at Cougar Field.
The visitors from Marion, Indiana scored five runs in the second and four more in the fifth to cruise to a 9-1 victory in the first game. MVNU's sole run came off of an Indiana Wesleyan error in the bottom of the fifth. Sheridan Sullivan got the loss for the Cougars and the MVNU offense was only able to get three hits off the Wildcats' pitchers.
In the second game, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. IWU came back with two in the fourth and one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead. Despite scoring two runs across the final two frames and having the tying and winning runs aboard, the Cougars were unable to complete the comeback and fell 4-3. Maddelyn Wine pitched 7.0 strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk. She struck out six batters. Mackenzie Hancock was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and Kylee Pettit also had two hits in game two.
What's Next
The Lady Cougars will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Spring Arbor University for a doubleheader tomorrow, April 15. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00pm with game two to follow.
