Marcum’s Big Day Leads MVNU to Sweep of No.6 Indiana Wesleyan

MARION, Ind. — The (RV) Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (18-3, 10-2 CL) extended its winning streak to seven games after a massive sweep at No.6 Indiana Wesleyan University (17-7, 6-4 CL) on Thursday, March 30.

Kaycee Ollis put MVNU on the board first in game one with an RBI-double that scored Macee Marcum in the top of the second. Marcum extended MVNU's lead in the fourth with a solo homerun. With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, MVNU gave up an IWU run, making the score 2-1. The Lady Cougars held strong in the bottom of the seventh, keeping IWU off the board to secure the game one victory by a final of 2-1. Sheridan Sullivan put together another great start in the circle. The junior pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits and one earned run. Sullivan had 12 strikeouts in the win.

MVNU carried over its momentum into game two and was able to withstand a fast start from the hosts. Trailing 1-3 heading into the third, MVNU got another homer from Marcum, this time a two-run shot, to tie the game at three. A big fourth inning for the Lady Cougars put them in control. RBI's from Mollie Pentz, Kiera Mayer, and Marcum put MVNU up 6-3. After an IWU run in the fifth, Marcum sent out her second homer of the game and third of the day to put MVNU up 7-4. The Lady Cougars would go on to win by a final of 7-5. Maddelyn Wine got the win in the circle for MVNU, pitching five innings and allowing just two earned runs. Wine gave up five hits and had four strikeouts.

 

What's Next

With the sweep, MVNU is now second in the Crossroads League standings and will host first place Marian University on Saturday, April 1. First pitch of the doubleheader against the No.17 Knights is set for 1:00pm.
