Men’s Volleyball Drops Match to Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's volleyball team (8-11, 5-8 WHAC) faced the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles (8-12, 7-6 WHAC) on the road on Saturday, March 21.  

During the first set MVNU took a 4-3 lead after a kill by Noah Wineberg, assisted by Jaxson Snell. Continuing to build the lead, Christian Kyer had back-to-back kills to make it 16-11, forcing a Cornerstone timeout. Wineberg immediately served an ace after the timeout, going up 17-11. Two kills by Jackson Bush, assisted by Snell, would secure the Cougar win. In the second set, MVNU and Cornerstone went back and forth in point scoring. Kyer had a kill that would put MVNU up 15-14, but Cornerstone pulled away and won the second set 25-19. 

In the third set, the Cougars started quick with a 5-1 lead after a kill from Tommy Tierney, assisted by Snell. Later, the Golden Eagles came back to tie the game up 14-14. Cornerstone reached set-point off an MVNU service error, but MVNU answered with a kill by Hayvin Larison. After more back and forth scoring, the Golden Eagles once again pulled away, winning a hard-fought battle in set three by a score of 34-32. During the fourth set, the Cougars had its only lead of the set after a kill from Kyer, assisted by Austin Kolaczkowski, to make it 6-5. MVNU kept it close, but Cornerstone would win set four 25-22 and win the match 3-1. 

Bush led the Cougars, having 16 kills on a kill percentage of 0.714. Tierney added 15 kills and two service aces. Wineberg had ten kills, one service ace, and one block. Snell had 33 assists, ten digs, and one service ace. Kolaczkowski had 25 assists.  

 

What's Next 

The Cougars will next host Goshen College on Tuesday, March 31 at Ariel Arena, starting at 7:00 p.m.
