Strong Performance Leads to Shutout Victory in Season Opener for Men’s Soccer

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team (1-0) opened its season at CH4 Stadium on Saturday, August 23 against Bluffton University.

Baba Sarr put MVNU on the board and scored his first goal in a Cougar uniform in the 19th minute to put the team up 1-0. Chucho Salgado was credited with the assist on the play. The MVNU defense was strong from the jump, and helped it carry a 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, Miguel Bello made his presence felt, scoring goals in the 53rd and 60th minute to stretch MVNU's lead to 3-0. The goals where the first of Bello's MVNU career and were assisted by Sarr and Max Walker. MVNU's final goal of the game came from Dante Cooper in the 79th minute. The goal was also the first of his career.

The Cougars dominated in shots, leading the category 24-3 with 11 of those shots being on goal compared to just one for the guests. Brayden Pierson played all 90 minutes in goal, coming away with one save in the shutout.

Kaleb Blevins, who coached his first game as the head coach of the soccer program, got his first career coaching win as MVNU defeated Bluffton by a final score of 4-0.

 

What's Next:

MVNU will be back in action on Wednesday, August 27. MVNU hosts Siena Heights University at CH4 Stadium, with kickoff coming at 7:00 p.m.
