Baseball Closes Series at Marian with Shutout Victory

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (24-14, 12-12 CL) resumed its series at MU Ballpark on Monday, April 7, against the Marian University Knights (19-17, 15-9 CL).

 

Game 1 Summary:

In the first game of the day, MVNU struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. An error by the Knights allowed Rider Minnick and Grant Wheeler to score. Marian began to take control, claiming the lead with a three-run third inning, followed by a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Marian then hit a three-run homer in the seventh, putting it up 10-2. MVNU walked in a run in the top of the eighth but could not generate anything else on offense in the 3-10 loss.

 

Game 2 Summary:

In game two, MVNU got all the runs it needed to win the game in the first and second innings. MVNU scored twice in the first thanks to a Minnick RBI single that scored Grant Moore, followed by Brady Lester scoring after an error in centerfield. MVNU's final run came in the second inning after Brennen Nichols hit a sac fly to score Zackary Hoop. The Cougars had great pitching in its 3-0 win as Reese Willoughby got the victory on the mound. Willoughby pitched five shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out nine. Caden Conn pitched two innings of relief. The freshman allowed two hits and zero runs, while also having three strikeouts.

 

What's Next:

The Cougars host Indiana Wesleyan for a four-game home series beginning on Friday, April 11. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Cougar Baseball Field.
