Cougars Knock off No. 13 Trojans, Leave Upland with Split

UPLAND, Ind. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (20-10, 8-8 CL) traveled to Upland, Indiana to take on conference component Taylor University (24-5, 15-1) on Saturday, March 22.  

 

Game 1 Summary: 

The Cougars took the lead in the top of the third inning, starting with Zackary Hoop's single to left field. Brady Lester followed with a single to right, driving in the first run of the game. Ryan Willoughby then delivered a two-RBI double to center field, putting the Cougars ahead 4-0. The Trojans responded with a two-run homer to right field, cutting the lead to 4-2. In the top of the fourth, Hoop drew a walk and was driven in by Alejandro Delgado, extending the Cougars' lead to 5-2. Austin Fox started on the mound, striking out five and allowing only five hits. Maxwell Donawa relieved Fox in the bottom of the sixth, giving up just one run in the seventh and earning the save. The Cougars upset the No. 13 Trojans, 5-3. 

 

Game 2 Summary: 

MVNU started strong in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs. Kaid Carpenter hit a home run to right field, bringing in Willoughby, who had doubled to center. The Cougars led 2-0. However, the Trojans found their rhythm in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, combining for twelve runs and taking a commanding 12-2 lead over the Cougars. MVNU would fall by a final of 12-2. 

 

What's Next: 

MVNU will return to Cougar Field to face Crossroads League opponent Spring Arbor University on Friday, March 28. The first pitch of the doubleheader will be at 1:00 p.m.
