Baseball Closes Series at Grace with Split

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (17-7, 5-5 CL) wrapped up its four-game series at the Grace College Lancers (6-13, 1-9 CL) on Saturday, March 15.

 

Game 1 Summary:

MVNU struck first with three runs in the top of the first after RBI's from Grant Wheeler, Ryan Willoughby, and Brandon Cokeley. The Lancers answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs, tying the ballgame at 3-3. The Lancers kept their foot on the gas, scoring two more runs in the second inning to claim a 5-3 lead. Three runs for the Cougars in the top of the fifth put them back on top 6-5. Willoughby hit a two-run double that scored Wheeler and Brady Lester, followed by a Cokeley RBI-single to left that scored Willoughby.

Grace began to take control of the game in the bottom of the fifth as it pushed across five runs to take a 10-6 lead. MVNU added two more runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to two, but Grace responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Lancers went on to win by a final score of 13-8 in game one.

 

Game 2 Summary:

MVNU responded to the loss in the first game of the day in a big way as it lit up the scoreboard with 18 runs off a season-high 25 hits. Brady Lester led MVNU with a Grand Slam in the third inning and seven RBI's. The home run for the sophomore was his third of the series and fourth of the season. Brennen Nichols and Alejandro Delgado also homered for the Cougars in the ballgame. Delgado also had a team-high five hits. The offense was hot from the start for MVNU, resulting in an 18-11 victory to close the series at Grace. Jarin Bertke got the start for the Cougars on the mound and was credited with the win.

 

What's Next:

MVNU takes on Taylor in Upland, Indiana on Friday, March 21. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m.
