MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (20-20, 15-17 CL) hosted Goshen College (9-33, 5-25 CL) in its final home series of the season on Saturday, April 22.
It was also senior day for MVNU as it honored Austin Brown, Cooper Crawford, Noah Gleason, Damien Kandel, Sam LoPiccolo, Josh Pettit, Grant Wagner, and Brady Wallace prior to game one.
MVNU began the day strong with a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Goshen intentionally loaded the bases with one out on the board. Joe Poremsky made the Maple Leafs pay as he drew a bases loaded walk to push across the game winning run. Holden Blankenship finished the game 2-4 at the plate with a homerun and two RBI. Hogan Heck had a team-high three hits in five at bats for MVNU.
Maxwell Donawa gave MVNU five strong innings as the sophomore allowed just five hits and one earned run. Donawa struck-out three batters. Senior, Brown gave MVNU 4.2 innings of relief and gave up just three hits and one run. Brown had three strikeouts. Cruz McFadden forced a groundout in his 0.1 innings of work and was credited with the win.
The Cougars kept rolling in game two and won by a final of 6-3. After falling behind after a pair of solo homeruns in the first inning from Goshen, MVNU responded nicely with a run in the bottom of the second and three runs in the bottom of the third. RBI from Zackary Hoop and Rider Minnick in the seventh helped extend MVNU's 4-3 lead. McFadden shut down the seventh, picking up his tenth save of the season.
Cole Schreck got the win on the mound after pitching five innings. Schreck gave up four hits and two earned runs while striking out four Maple Leafs.
What's Next
MVNU will take a break from conference play and head to Hamilton, Ohio on April 25 for a doubleheader at Miami-Hamilton University. Game one is set to start at 2:00pm
