LEESBURG, Fla. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (3-1, 3-1 CL) defeated Bethel University (8-8, 1-3 CL) in both games of their doubleheader on Wednesday, March 1, winning the first game 12-8 and the second game by a score of 10-6.
The Cougars started their season by taking three of four games from Pilots to give them a nice record in the Crossroads League to begin the 2023 season.
In game one, the Cougars relied on nine runs scored across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to get the job done against Bethel. Johnny Nixon started on the mound for MVNU and earned the win, going 5.0 innings. He gave up five runs (three of which were earned) on seven hits while he struck out one batter and walked none. Maxwell Donawa got the save as the sophomore pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked one. Rider Minnick paced the Cougars at the plate as he homered and drove in five runs. Homeruns by Hunter Billman and Blaine Keener ensured the Cougars took the first game of the day.
In the second game, Billman homered again and drove in four to put the Cougars in the driver's seat. Joe Poremsky had a nice day at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Logan Fox was the starting pitcher in game two, pitching a scoreless 3.0 innings of work. Reese Willoughby got the win for the Cougars, as the freshman went 1.1 innings. Cole Schreck struck out two batters before Cruz McFadden struck out two of his own to close things up with 1.2 scoreless innings of work.
What's Next
MVNU gets a rest day on Thursday before facing Trinity Baptist on Friday, March 3. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm in Auburndale.
